Engineering and Maintenance Director

Your Tasks

Responsibility Overview:

  • Directs and oversees the entire Engineering and Maintenance department.  Maintenance Team Leaders will be the “first contact” for floor employees, however the “Open Door Policy” will allow employees to contact this role directly without going to the Team Leader's role first if the employee so wishes. 
  • Ultimately responsible for a workforce of approximately 30 employees with two team leaders (mechanical and electrical / automation) and in addition to the Maintenance Process Manager who is going to be the backup and main support for process related tasks.
  • Acts in an international company with regular contacts with other operational and none-operational departments.
  • Responsible for the OPEX maintenance and investment budgets (in cooperation with the Director of Operations and of Supply Chain Management) of the facility and assuring these budgets are in line with the global business and operational strategies and tactical plans.  
  • Must successfully maintain relations with other departments and external relations. 
  • Must perform as both a strategic and technical (hands-on) leader.
  • Acts in an Industrial environment with both blue, white collar and managerial workforce and is successfully able to smoothly pivot between both.   
  • Acts in an industrial environment with high level of compliancy rules (safety, environment, quality, commercial).  
  • Extensive contact with internal/external customer and service providers / suppliers, to identify, research, analyse and resolve issues.

Staff / Personnel:

  • Works with the President and HR in developing and mentoring direct staff.  Makes sure that all relevant positions are adequately described, recruitment takes places and people achieve the appropriate training and skill level
  • Work with local HR to hire, onboard, monitor and evaluate the performance of departmental staff.
  • Oversee the process of hiring, monitor and evaluate the performance of maintenance staff. Oversees and organises training needs for the staff; technical training and/or training on new policies or processes in coordination with the maintenance team leaders and the maintenance process manager.
  • Motivate and coach staff; get them involved in the objectives. Make them feel valued and respected. 
  • Create a motivated team that acts according to the Aurubis values 
  • Make sure the maintenance team is fully staffed, retain knowledge and talent. 
  • Define tasks, responsibilities and KPI’s for each position within maintenance and with production and assure the Maintenance team leaders and the Maintenance process manager are relaying and supporting accurate information along with holding employees responsible. 

Health, Safety and Environment:

  • Ensures the consistent development of occupational safety awareness in the maintenance organization.
  • Ensures compliance with occupational health and safety processes and actively supports the team leads in the implementation of safe working conditions.
  • Owns the process of assuringunsafe practices and/or installations are documented and reported.
  • Organizes and supervises counter actions with the support of the HSE manager.
  • Acts as a role model; raise awareness and motivate team members to high levels of safety behavior.
  • Ensures that all environmental requirements and regulations are fulfilled in the production department
  • Responsible for assuring  that all deviations are reported in the appropriate way and undertakes counteractions in coordination with the HSE manager
  • Act swiftly on all reported safety issues and take all measures needed to mitigate the risks.  

Continuous Improvements:

  • Identify maintenance process or equipment improvements to increase production volume and/or to improve safety, availability, quality and/or emissions.
  • Define improvement, contact suppliers and/or contractors to get all information necessary to set up a basic budget.
  • Assist in the decision-making process of prioritizing improvements.
  • Realization of equipment or maintenance improvement projects, from start to finish.
  • Assist engineering in more in-depth/complicatedequipment improvement project, while funtioning as the the single point of contact for these projects.
  • Assist during the engineering phase and during the implementation phase.
  • Search for and secure process’ or equipment improvements to increase production volume and/or to improve safety, availability, quality and/or emissions.
  • Define improvement, contact suppliers and/or contractors to get all information necessary to set up a basic budget.
  • Work with the Production Director and other co-workers to design Continuous Improvement plans and processes in addition to other projects.


  • Responsible for establishing mid-term planning in production and Supply Chain Management department such as but not limited to staffing, maintenance, supplies, cost centers
  • Responsible for establishing a CAPEX budget and coordinating the execution of investment projects.
  • Responsible for setting up an OPEX budget. Maintain the budget and take necessary actions to achieve set goals.
  • Coordinate the execution of investment projects as it relates to production. 
  • Work with other local site leaders in supporting the overall operational plans of corporate and the Aurubis Richmond President.


  • Consult with Aurubis President and other top management/stakeholders in order to successfully develop a strategy for Aurubis Richmond Production in accordance with the global business and operational strategies and tactical plans. 
  • Effectively relay the mission and strategy to the Production and Supply Chain Management Director in order for him to work productively day to day.
  • Create a department hierarchy plan and disseminate it to the production staff and manager.
  • Set maintenance goals in accordance with the Aurubis Richmond strategy.  
  • Define, install, and lead operational projects and initiatives as defined in the tactical planning.  


  • Oversee the coordination, management and maintenance of the production processes and the day-to-day activities of the maintenance unit.  
  • Improve processes and policies to obtain the organizational goals.
  • Addresses and coordinates all maintenance tasks and processes of the production department with the Production and Supply Chain Management Directors
  • Formulate and implement departmental policies and procedures.  
  • Monitor adherence to rules, regulations and procedures.  
  • Map all risks (safety, process, environment, technical and financial) identified and define corrective actions. Assure these actions are carried out and have the expected results.  


  • Be a contributing individual of the AOS team; be an active participant in the AOS program. 
  • Work closely together with other departments to ensure lean cooperation.
  • Work closely with local HR in projects such as Workers Compensation, Learning & Development, staff and organization build-out and more.
  • Responsible for identifying, making recommendations, assisting with correcting any unsafe conditions within the company along with owning the documentation process.

Your Profile


  • This role is Exempt status and will also be expected to be available in case of emergencies after-hours.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience with related responsibilities in maintenance/technical services/engineering/technology.
  • 3-5 years consistent hands-on experience in the US.
  • Work experience as a maintenance manager, ideally in an international environment.
  • Must be conversant in EPA/EPD and OSHA regulations. Will be required to become an OSHA Train-the-Trainer level expert. May be required to become (at minimum) Six Sigma, Yellow Belt level certified.
  • Experience with commission and/or the start -up of a plant.
  • Profound understanding of machinery and equipment for chemical or metallurgical production processes and requirements
  • Strong leadership skills with international and US employees.
  • To be able to motivate staff to ensure maintenance and production targets are met while maintaining quality standards.
  • Result oriented leadership approach.
  • SME (subject matter expert) and solid hands-on experience/knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices in the workplace.
  • Proficiency in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and through teams at all levels of the workforce.
  • Must be able to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
  • Ability to travel throughout facility as required to conduct safety inspections.
  • Ability to respond quickly and efficiently to all safety needs on the floor or in the office areas.
  • Must wear all required PPE when in protected areas.
  • Willing to some (overnight) travel domestically and/or internationally
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project & Outlook).

Preferred (but not required):

  • Experience with ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001/ISO 45001.
  • Speaking and listening language skills in a 2nd language is preferred.

  • B.S./Masters in Metallurgy, mechanical engineering or comparable required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be willing and physically able to walk/work in, observe and spend time in a smelter environment.
  • Must be willing and physically able to work in intense heat situations.
  • Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, climbing, balancing, crouching and kneeling.
  • May have prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, in meetings or presenting and training.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Ability to travel throughout facility as required to conduct audits and/or walk-thrus.
  • Must wear all required PPE when in protected areas.
  • Required to reach and grasp with hands and reach with arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to respond to any safety incident quickly and effectively and/or accident including First Responder duties.
  • Willing and physically able to travel domestically and/or internationally, if requested.
  • This is an extensively physical role.
