As the Industrial Hygienist, you will be responsible for anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling health hazards in a manufacturing environment. This role ensures compliance with occupational health regulations and corporate standards to protect worker health and support a zero-incident culture. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, implement and maintain industrial hygiene strategies specific to a heavy metals processing environment.
Industrial Hygienist
Your Tasks
Conduct industrial hygiene assessments for airborne contaminants, noise, heat stress, and other physical or chemical exposures specific to copper smelting operations.
Perform personal and area air monitoring for heavy metals (e.g., lead), and other substances common to smelting.
Develop and implement exposure control plans (ECPs), ventilation systems reviews, and engineering control recommendations.
Manage the respiratory protection program, including fit testing, medical evaluations, and training.
Administer biological monitoring programs in coordination with occupational health professionals.
Lead hazard communication efforts, ensuring SDS management, employee training, and labeling compliance.
Evaluate and recommend appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Analyze sampling results and prepare technical reports with recommendations to reduce occupational exposures.
Support incident investigations involving potential health hazards or overexposures.
Monitor compliance with OSHA, MSHA (if applicable), ACGIH, NIOSH, and company standards.
Maintain industrial hygiene records and documentation required for audits or regulatory inspections.
Participate in cross-disciplinary safety inspections and risk assessments.
Provide IH-related training to employees and contractors as needed.
Stay updated with the latest trends in industrial hygiene while being consistent and proactive regarding implementing these practices in the workplace.

Your Profile
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, or a related field. Experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Minimum 3–5 years of IH experience in heavy industry or mining/metallurgical operations; copper smelting experience strongly preferred.
CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred or in progress.
Additional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or OSHA 30-Hour are a plus.
Strong understanding of IH sampling methods, analytical techniques, and applicable standards (OSHA, ACGIH TLVs, NIOSH).
Familiarity with smelting-related hazards including thermal processes, slag handling, furnace off-gases, and metal particulates is a plus.
Proficiency in IH equipment use (e.g., air sampling pumps, noise dosimeters, FTIR analyzers).
Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional EHS team.
Excellent communication and leadership skills to influence and engage employees at all levels.
Ability to analyze safety data, identify trends, and implement effective solutions.
Experience in delivering safety training programs and maintaining compliance records.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Willingness to work in an industrial environment with exposure to varying temperatures and physical demands.
Ability to travel within the facility and attend occasional off-site training or meetings as needed.
Must be willing and physically able to observe and walk in a smelter environment.
Must be willing and physically able to work in varying cold and heat situations.
Could have times that are prolonged periods of walking, standing, and bending.
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
Ability to travel throughout the facility as required to conduct audits and make observations
Must wear all required PPE when in protected areas.
Required to reach and grasp with hands and reach with arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Willing and physically able to travel domestically and/or internationally if requested.
